5 Important Features of the Otto Hutt design08

Launched in early 2021, the Bauhaus-inspired fountain pen created by Otto Hutt is already enjoying success among pen enthusiasts and collectors and it’s quite easy to see why. The pen is anything but ordinary and its unique design is perfectly adapted to modern times. In today’s article we’re going to be looking at 5 features of the design08.

Unique & clean design

Speaking of design, we need to point out that the whole pen is a reflection of Mark Braun’s vision. The German designer is responsible for the perfect shape as well as the clean aesthetics of this pen. It was clearly designed to be functional and you’ll soon understand why. Look closer at the the vertical lines engraved on the cap and piston knob. The vertical lines indicate the direction you need to turn to unscrew the cap or activate the Pull+Twist system. A subtle yet ingenious detail, isn’t it?

Innovative filling system – Pull+Twist™

First used for designC, the pen released by Otto Hutt to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the brand, the Pull+Twist™ filling system is also found in design08. To action the system, pull back and rotate the piston knob to create a vacuum in the ink chamber, submerge the nib in the ink bottle, then fill it up by twisting the piston knob round and clicking it into place. You’ll find that the system is easy to operate and each refill is quick and clean.

Comfortable grip section

The grip section is made of PVD coated steel and has an unusual shape that we haven’t seen on a fountain pen before. But, that doesn’t mean it’s a downside, quite the opposite. Holding the pen in hand, it feels comfortable and secured and that’s an advantage for extended writing sessions.

Well-proportioned body

In terms of proportions, note that design08 is a big pen. It has a well-proportioned body and weighs 57 grams, fact that puts it on the heavy side. However, it feels surprisingly good in hand, like a quality fountain pen.

18k gold nib

Last but not least, the nib. Made of 18k gold, the nib is incredibly smooth and comes in extra-fine, fine, medium and broad sizes. Unlike the other Otto Hutt nibs, which have a two-tone finish, design08’s nib is completely gold, which looks quite interesting in contrast to the grey body and black section.
