Every year, the sumptuous Villa d’Este – a 16th-century villa situated on the western shore of Lake Como – is home to some of the world’s most spectacular historic cars during the famous Concorso d’Eleganza. This weekend, car enthusiasts from all over the world had the opportunity to admire some automotive masterpieces including the Coppa d’Oro winner – a Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder from 1961 – the star of the competition that captured everyone’s imagination.
Of course, as soon as I saw the winner, I started wondering what pen would make a gorgeous pair with the classic Ferrari. I think once you got the ‘pen virus’, it’s hard to think clearly. Jokes aside, I’ve always been of the opinion that pens and cars complement each other, but for this beauty, it had to be something special.
Looking at the chrome rims, I knew the pen had to feature silver trim, but finding the right blue to match the color of the car’s body was quite a challenge. Dealing with a Ferrari, I knew for sure it would be a pen that exudes the same Italian spirit and elegance, so I turned to Montegrappa. Their 1930 Extra series seemed to be a great candidate, but the Mediterranean Blue version didn’t match the blue of the car’s body.
Any other series would not have lived up to the ravishing elegance of this Ferrari, which is why I went for Montegrappa’s Bespoke service, using the Configurator to design the pen specifically for this car. I started working on the Extra Custom series’ chassis and opted for celluloid in turquoise as it was the only shade that matched the blue of the gorgeous car. Why celluloid? Well, for its particularly beautiful lustre, but also to celebrate the rarity of this Ferrari from the 60s.
Although it was more of an imaginary exercise, I’m really happy with how things turned out and I think I managed to make a great pair out of the two beauties.
