Can a writing instrument be both timeless and new? Well, it can. Caran d’Ache has updated one of its most iconic series, adding a new model with a unique guilloche pattern to the Ecridor lineup. It’s not a major launch—the Swiss manufacturer has focused more on the Straw Marquetry Dragon Limited Edition—but as a big fan of this series, I think it’s definitely worth a look.
Before we dive into this new model, I’d like to share a few things you might not know about the Ecridor. Often underrated, yet with a rich history, the Ecridor series holds a significant place in Caran d’Ache’s evolution—it was the Maison’s very first luxury writing instrument.
Launched shortly after the Fixpencil in 1929, the original Ecridor was introduced as a mechanical pencil. It’s a piece you can spot from miles away thanks to its signature hexagonal shape—deeply rooted in its DNA—and the variety of engraved guilloche patterns that give each piece its own personality and charm.

Named Ecaille, which translates to “scale” in French, the guilloche motif evokes the delicate textures and iridescent reflections of fish scales, creating a special visual effect under the light. “Inspired by the grandeur of the ocean depths, the Ecridor Ecaille invites you to explore the wonders of the sea,” says Caran d’Ache.
What truly sets the Ecridor apart is the meticulous craftsmanship behind each design. Creating a guilloche pattern on a hexagonal body is no easy task: it requires precision, patience, and an exceptional level of skill, but the pen is made in Switzerland for a reason.
To achieve these perfectly aligned motifs, Caran d’Ache’s craftsmen use a traditional milling technique. The guilloche is engraved directly onto the metal body using a diamond-tipped tool, resulting in a seamless, uninterrupted pattern that not only catches the eye but also feels incredibly satisfying to the touch—especially while writing.
The pen is crafted from brass and finished with a platinum coating, featuring the Caran d’Ache logo laser-engraved on the push button. It also comes with a flexible clip, making it easy to attach to a notebook cover or jacket pocket—perfect for everyday carry.
This special edition is available exclusively as a ballpoint pen, which might be the only drawback. Personally, I would’ve loved to see it offered at least as a mechanical pencil or rollerball as well. That said, if you find this design attractive, it’s a perfect choice for a daily companion—whether you’re jotting down quick notes in your notebook at the office or keeping it handy in your car for moments when you need it most.
