We know it sounds like a pretty bold statement, however, those of you who are already familiar with this model and have probably had it in collection for a while probably resonate with the title. For others, it might come as a shock. But what makes us think that about a pen that has only been on the market for a few years? What makes it so special? Let’s find out!
Before we get to the story behind the model itself, I’d start with the look of this pen, which is simply unique and stands out in the whole range of cigar-shaped pens that the industry is already used to. But it’s much more to this pen that makes it a masterpiece.

Form follows function
What I like about this model is the creativity behind the design, which is surely something you don’t see in a regular pen. Mark Braun has chosen to mark the use of this pen through various design elements, making it both aesthetic and functional. So, on design08 every aspect of its construction serves a specific purpose aimed at enhancing its utility and ease of use. From the grip to the intricately designed vertical and horizontal guilloché patterns, each element intuitively guides the user on how to operate the pen properly. The grip part is shaped to fit comfortably between the fingers, indicating where to hold the pen for optimal writing comfort and control. Meanwhile, the guilloché patterns are not just decorative; they also provide tactile feedback, signaling where to turn parts for refilling ink, which is why on the piston knob you will see a vertical guilloche indicating that you need to pull in order to fill the pen with ink.
Subtle details that speak volumes
If you like subtle details, you’ll really appreciate this pen because it is a masterpiece of understated elegance, where every detail contributes to a narrative of quality without the need for overt brand promotion. The approach taken in its design is one of subtlety and sophistication, focusing on the materials, finish, and writing performance as the true hallmarks of its value. The logo, rather than being prominently displayed, is laser-engraved on the top of the clip, serving as a discreet testament to the brand’s confidence in the pen’s inherent quality.
The choice of materials and finishes speaks volumes about the pen’s luxury and craftsmanship. The nib, crafted from 18k gold, boasts a yellow-gold finish that adds a touch of classic elegance. Its clean design is devoid of unnecessary ornamentation, ensuring that the writing experience remains the pen’s focal point. This golden nib contrasts beautifully with the pen’s body, coated in ruthenium, and the grip, which features a PVD matt finish.
Perfectly balanced
Weight is a decisive aspect when evaluating a writing instrument. I personally prefer heavier writing instruments because they give me a well-built feeling, and design08 is exactly like this being made of solid brass and then coated in high-quality ruthenium. At 80 grams (57 grams uncapped) it has some heft to it but feels like a quality pen in the hand. Although the size puts it on the heavier side of pens, I don’t consider it a pen you use on very rare occasions like it’s the case of the Montegrappa Dante Alighieri which weighs 125 grams for example. It is therefore excellent for everyday writing!
Pull & Twist – Innovative Filling System
While many models on the market are equipped with a converter, the Design08 boasts a piston filling system. Well, it’s no ordinary piston filler, but rather a very innovative and unique mechanism. All the engineering around it has been very cleverly implemented into the design to fit harmoniously and provide a smooth user experience.
A glimpse inside
According to Marco Frei – Otto Hutt’s CEO, the design08 consists of 25 parts of which just seven are visible. Although no other information has been revealed, Samuel Naldi has shown in a Youtube video the inside of the intricate machinery; you can take a closer look at it by clicking here. Fascinating is not only how precisely each little element is assembled but also the sounds they make while being operated. If you are a devoted connoisseur, you will certainly appreciate it.
How it works
Let’s get to the fun part now. How it works? This mechanism was designed to be user-friendly and as elaborate as it looks, it’s actually easy to use. So, you begin by gently pulling back the end of the pen’s shaft, then twist it counter-clockwise until you feel some resistance; that will create vacuum seal inside the chamber. Next, you submerge the nib in ink, twist the end clockwise until it is back in its original position, drawing ink up through the nib to fill the chamber. When you have finished filling the pen, you just have to click the end of the pen back into place, dab off the excess ink and you’re all set. You see, it doesn’t require much effort on your end.
Available in Three Colors – Ruthenium, Black and Gold
This fountain pen is offered in three variations to suit personal preferences and styles. Each variant maintains the pen’s distinctive design and features, allowing individuals to choose the color that best reflects their personality and professional identity. This also makes the model very versatile.
Conclusion
The design08 stands as a pinnacle of fountain pen innovation, setting a new standard in the realm of writing instruments. Its unique design, characterized by a perfect balance of weight and an unmatched smooth writing experience, not only sets it apart but also raises the bar for what we can expect from a fountain pen. The subtle yet impactful details, from the tactile guilloché patterns that guide the user’s grip to the laser-engraved logo that whispers luxury rather than shouting it, underscore a design philosophy that places user experience and quality at the forefront.
Moreover, the innovative features of the design08—such as the seamless integration of materials like the 18k gold nib against the contrast of ruthenium and PVD matt finishes—demonstrate a meticulous attention to both aesthetics and functionality. This pen doesn’t just write; it performs, offering a tactile and visual pleasure that complements its practical application.
