Graf von Faber-Castell has been among the most esteemed manufacturers of fine writing instruments for many years, renowned for its tradition, high-quality materials, craftsmanship, and innovative spirit. Its broad portfolio includes regular and limited edition models, including the renowned Pen of the Year series, probably the most sought-after by collectors, or their iconic Perfect Pencil, an all-time classic and a must-have item. Recently, the brand has turned the Perfect Pencil into a unique limited edition called Project Stellar. What’s new about this model, and is it worth it? Let’s find out!
The Perfect Pencil – Brief History
Many are familiar with the more contemporary version of this pencil, but the earliest version dates back to around 1885 (according to the manufacturer), when the first Pocket Pencil was first introduced. Later, around 1993, a version with an improved design was released. This model is still part of the current portfolio, alongside a Magnum version launched in 2016.
The Perfect Pencil is a blend of functionality and luxury and it’s become a symbol in the pen industry. The reason why it’s called the perfect pencil is simple: the pencil features a built-in sharpener, an extender with a built-in eraser, and is topped with a protective cap that also serves as a pencil extender, enhancing both its utility and elegance. Made from Californian cedar wood and available in a platinum or sterling silver finish, it is celebrated for its design and usability.
The Inspiration Behind the Project Stellar
Humankind’s progress and relentless efforts to discover the unknown, particularly in space exploration, served as a profound inspiration for Graf von Faber-Castell’s creation department, leading to this marvelous limited edition—Perfect Pencil Project Stellar. Just as pioneering astronauts like Juri Gagarin and Neil Armstrong pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible, Graf von Faber-Castell sought to encapsulate this spirit of discovery and innovation in their craftsmanship.
The Project Stellar represents more than just a luxury writing instrument—it’s a tribute to humanity’s quest to explore the unknown and always aim for greatness. The pencil’s design reflects the precision, elegance, and ambition to push boundaries, combining fine materials with the art of craftsmanship to celebrate the limitless possibilities of human achievement.
Design
The design follows the classic lines of the perfect pencil but brings a cutting-edge look with space-inspired elements: the extender is made of perforated, matte-silvery metal emulating the exterior of a spacecraft. The recess at its end includes a sodalite, an intensely blue shimmering gemstone, giving the impression of looking at Earth through the round window of a space station. The golden clip as well as the golden cage inside the barrel create a striking contrast.
In addition to its design, what I like about this edition is the stand Graf von Faber-Castell created so you can display it on your desk when not in use. This way, the Perfect Pencil looks like a rocket before launch. There’s also an attractive gift box that comes along, which makes this edition a great gift choice for the winter holidays ahead.
Collectible Value
Unlike the current versions that are constantly in production, this limited edition has collectible value with only 1000 pieces produced worldwide. The spectacular design also makes this edition a great decorative piece. If you own the other limited editions of the perfect pencil, this edition is a fantastic addition to consider. If not, even more so, it’s a good starting point.
The new Graf von Faber-Castell Perfect Pencil Project Stellar is priced at €640.00 and is available to order from authorized retailers.
