The Lunar New Year is soon to begin, making its debut on February 17. For the next fifteen days, millions of people around the world take part in one of the most symbol-rich celebrations on the calendar. Family gatherings, symbolic decorations, fireworks, and cultural performances will mark the two-week period, all in the spirit of renewal and good fortune.
This year ushers in the Year of the Fire Horse, the seventh symbol in the 12-year zodiac cycle. Many expect it to be a year of progress, with new opportunities on the horizon, bold decisions to be taken, and a free spirit to be fully embraced.
To mark the occasion, several brands, including Montblanc, presented special creations inspired by the horse and its symbolism. The Hamburg-based brand introduced a 512-piece limited edition in solid sterling silver, decorated with a hand-engraved horse. The figure nods both to the zodiac sign and to the flying horse, a symbol that holds a special place in Chinese tradition.
The idea of the flying horse comes from ancient China, where the Tianma, or “Heavenly Horse,” was said to possess unusual strength and speed, almost beyond the natural world.
It is said that during the Han dynasty, powerful horses from Central Asia were brought into China. Their strength, speed, and endurance were unlike anything people had seen before, and it didn’t take long for these real animals to feed the legend.
As the story spread, the line between what was real and what was imagined grew thinner. The Heavenly Horse moved beyond myth, becoming an image people returned to again and again, shaping its presence in Chinese art, from bronze sculptures to tomb figures and painted murals.
For this edition, the horse is depicted on the side of the cap, captured mid-stride with a delicate turn of the head, its characteristic Chinese hair bun and fluid gait rendered with remarkable finesse. The figure is framed by finely engraved ornaments inspired by the lucky cloud motif (祥云), a symbol of fortune in Chinese culture. Encircling the edge of the cap is a discreet engraving mentioning the current year of the Horse (2026) alongside the six preceding years of the Horse. A Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl crowns the cap of the writing instrument.
While the horse takes centre stage, the barrel is deliberately kept restrained, ensuring nothing distracts from the grandeur of the horse. Still, Montblanc adds just enough detail to keep things interesting. A fine ornamental engraving, inspired by the Chinese lucky knot Zhōngguó jié (中国结), runs across the platinum-coated surface, enhancing the design without overwhelming it. The cone is set with a topaz, a reference to the Horse sign’s birthstone, and a detail to pause over when your thoughts slow down mid-writing.
Moving to the nib, a signature of the Maison, it is handcrafted from 18k gold and features a finely engraved motif of the flying horse, serving as a reminder to the writer to always push beyond the limits.
Limited to just 512 pieces worldwide, the new Legend of the Zodiacs edition reflects Montblanc’s ongoing respect for symbolism and Asian cultural heritage.
