The fourth edition in Sailor’s ‘Dobutsu to Gekkou’ Series is here and has the horse as a central motif. The collection, which bears the artistic imprint of Lacquerware artist, Ikki Moroike, has impressed collectors and writing enthusiasts since the launch of its first model “Deer in the Moonlight”. Let’s take a look at the newest addition to the series.
‘Dobutsu to Gekkou’ Series Inspiration
The moon holds a profound influence on life in Japanese culture, weaving its way through mythology, literature, and daily existence. In Japanese folklore, the moon is a symbol of beauty, mystery, and transformation. It is believed to govern the rhythms of nature, influencing the behavior of animals and plants. For instance, the moon’s phases are thought to affect the breeding cycles of certain wildlife. It is also the reason why Sailor has started the ‘Animals in the Moonlight’ series, which is now at the fourth edition.
The ‘Uma to Gekkou’ edition
Inspired by the majesty of the horse, this year’s edition is available in only 50 copies worldwide just like the previous editions, which increases the value as well as the demand. But that’s not the only reason why this piece is so valuable. That’s largely down to Urushi artist Ikki Moroike – one of the most renowned Urushi artists in the world, whose work has been exhibited and awarded several times, with one of his crafts even being bought by the Imperial Household Agency in 1994.
To create each of the 50 editions it takes significant time, every Urushi detail being carefully applied by hand.
The Maki-e depicts a horse running wild under the full moon with its imposing structure and its fur reflected in silver. The body of the pen is made of ebonite and features a 21k gold nib with bi-color plating available in medium and broad. The pen can be filled by a cartridge/converter system and it weighs 32.8g, being comfortable enough to write with.
PRICE: EUR €4,840.00
