The ELBWOOD PocketMaster – Portable, Elegant, Timeless

I don’t know about you, but I always carry a pen with me — pretty much everywhere. I’ve been doing this for quite some time because I prefer jotting things down with a pen rather than on my phone. I keep one in the car and another in my pocket, but I often find most of my pens too bulky to carry comfortably. That’s why I’m always thinking about pocket pens, something compact, but beautifully designed. If such a pen existed, most of us would probably own one, right? Well, what if I told you that this pen has been in production for four years already, and it’s just as functional as it is aesthetic. Recently introduced in our magazine, ELBWOOD produces one of the most charming pocket pens. Their series is called the POCKETMASTER and is probably the smallest fountain pen in the world. Let’s take a closer look!

Design & Functionality

At just 10 cm long — almost 5 cm shorter than an iPhone 15 Pro — the Elbwood PocketMaster is so compact that it’s impossible not to carry with you. The only downside? Its ridiculously small size might make it easy to lose. Depending on the model you choose, the PocketMaster series is available in a variety of materials and colors, from classic brushed brass to limited editions crafted from walnut wood, silver or ebonite. The philosophy behind its design is simple yet well thought out and that is because Frank Pressentin, the founder, imagined the PocketMaster series as a blend of minimalist design and high-quality materials. If you look at his pens, there’s no distraction in design, but the beauty of materials and impeccable craftsmanship.

The short cap and barrel expose the ribbed grip zone in the middle and create a very special eye-catcher. The 0.5 mm deep furrows are cut into the material using a special knurling cutter and ensure secure spring guidance. No need to worry about the pen being too short to write with — the cap doubles as an extender and attaches to the back for a comfortable grip.

Handling

Handling is likely the aspect that interests most of you, and for good reason, given its size. Fortunately, the grip section looks quite convincing and if you count the cap that works as an extender I think it’s quite enough for a pocket pen. On top of that, the pen’s weight averages around 55g, varying by model, and provides excellent balance while writing. Personally, I’ve always preferred heavier writing instruments, as they offer a sense of quality, but you should try it for yourself, especially if you plan on getting one.

Variety

This is a part I really love. You can get this pen in a wide range of materials and colors, and of course, at different price points. For example, if you prefer a more understated design, the brushed brass version is a great choice. But if you’re looking for something more exquisite, I recommend checking out the limited editions, like the PocketMaster in sterling silver or the one crafted from walnut wood and nickel silver.

The Nib & Filling System

Elbwood values a high-quality nib, which is why they partner with JoWo for the nibs in their designs. This is the only component outsourced by Elbwood, and for the PocketMaster, there are two options available: a steel nib and an 18k gold version. Each nib is exclusively embossed with the ELBWOOD logo and comes in extra-fine, fine, medium and broad. As for the filling system, the PocketMaster is filled with a standard ink cartridge.

Conclusion

The Elbwood PocketMaster proves that great things truly come in small packages. Crafted with minimalist eleganceand premium materials, this compact fountain pen balances functionality and beauty effortlessly. Despite its tiny 10 cm size, it delivers a comfortable writing experience, thanks to its well-balanced weight and clever cap extender. With a variety of materials, a reliable nib, and a durable build, it’s a pocket pen designed to last. If you’ve been looking for the perfect on-the-go writing companion, this might just be it.
