Montegrappa Revisits the Overlook Hotel with The Shining Limited Edition

Some films entertain, while others leave an indelible mark on cinema. The Shining, released in 1980 and directed by Stanley Kubrick, belongs firmly to the second category. Adapted from Stephen King’s novel, the film moved horror away from simple shocks and monsters, replacing them with psychological tension, spatial unease, and the slow collapse of the human mind. More than four decades later, it remains one of the most studied and referenced horror films ever made.

Kubrick’s genius was not only in storytelling, but in atmosphere. The corridors of the Overlook Hotel, the impossible architecture, the recurring patterns, the unsettling silences, and the obsessive repetition of language all created a form of terror that felt intelligent and strangely elegant to the audience. It is exactly in these key scenes and motifs that Montegrappa found inspiration for its latest limited edition.

With its new limited edition “The Shining,” Montegrappa interprets Stanley Kubrick’s universe through the depth of its expertise, transforming precious materials into symbolic embellishments. Much like a film director who meticulously crafts a screenplay, determining every compositional element and artistic direction, Montegrappa carefully selected the materials used in the creation of this limited edition to capture the atmosphere of Kubrick’s film. From the 925 silver used for several components of the writing instrument, to the mahogany wood referencing the Overlook Hotel interiors, and the deep red resin evoking the film’s most iconic visual sequence, every material choice was conceived as part of a broader narrative, transforming the pen into both a writing instrument and a tactile tribute to cinematic history.

The cap is one of the most inventive areas of the design. Beneath a rotating vermeil disc inspired by a door peephole cover, the Grady twins appear and disappear through an optical mechanism. Around them is engraved their invitation: “Come play with us”, which still sends shivers down your spine. It is theatrical, but also clever, the kind of detail that collectors don’t mind paying extra for.

The cap band carries an engraved labyrinth, a direct nod to the hedge maze that became one of the film’s defining symbols. The clip is shaped as the key to Room 237, complete with a red resin tag. Even the blind cap is engraved continuously with the sentence: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” the typed phrase that signaled Jack Torrance’s complete psychological breakdown.

The fountain pen’s barrel introduces one of the strongest mechanical ideas in the edition. It opens like an elevator door, revealing Montegrappa’s Free Drop Reservoir filling system inside – a tribute to the elevator scene in which blood floods the hallway. I mean, how ingeniously is that?

The 18k gold nib is engraved with a stylised outline of Jack Torrance and is available in EF, F, M, B, and Stub 1.1 – a notably generous range of sizes designed to satisfy even the most demanding users. At 155 mm long and 19.5 mm in diameter, this is a substantial instrument, and its roughly 91-gram weight places it firmly in collector territory. That should not, however, discourage writers from enjoying it on paper, quite the contrary.

A rollerball version is also created on the occasion, featuring the same visual DNA. Both writing instruments are limited to 237 pieces worldwide, a reference to Room 237, and are presented in a wooden display case themed around the word “REDRUM,” which reveals the word MURDER when seen in a mirror.

The new Montegrappa The Shining is already available via Montegrappa’s official website as well as selected authorised retailers, priced at €6,595 for the fountain pen and €5,395 for the rollerball version.
