Otto Hutt announced yesterday, in what appears to be the final post on its official social media account, that the page will no longer remain active, thanking fans and users for their interest, support, and engagement over the years. Without any further details, it appears that Otto Hutt may cease the production of writing instruments, with the brand likely to be put on hold.
I still remember the launch of the Design 08 and the enthusiasm with which it was adopted by enthusiasts and collectors. That Bauhaus-inspired silhouette, shaped by Mark Braun, would go on to become the visual DNA of Otto Hutt, and for good reason, as it looked fantastic and full of character.
Even today, I still believe this model remains a very solid choice within the industry. And that was not all. The brand had devotees within the journaling community as well, many of whom appreciated the more accessible models in the range, such as the design03 and design06. Few could have anticipated that the brand’s story was slowly moving toward a period of pause.
For those caught by surprise by the announcement, in 2023, following negotiations, Faber-Castell acquired Robert E. Huber GmbH, the factory where Otto Hutt pens were produced. At the time, the move naturally raised questions about the future of the brand, although no official statement was issued on the matter.
Three years after the acquisition, Otto Hutt has announced the closure of its Instagram account and, likely, the end of production under the same name.
Shortly after the announcement, Samuel Naldi – Pen expert and founder of Style of Zug – shared his thoughts on the matter, explaining that the decision is likely a strategic one by Faber-Castell. He also spoke of how much he loves the brand and how deeply committed he remains to it, having been among the few who believed in Otto Hutt, especially in the design08 project from its earliest stages.
“We at Style of Zug have ensured that Otto Hutt pens will continue to be serviced and repaired, as the manufacturer, Robert E. Huber GmbH, remains active in production for Graf von Faber-Castell. Another important piece of news is that we at Style of Zug have acquired all remaining stock of the design08 and designC that was still available,” Samuel Naldi reassured fans and enthusiasts of the brand.
Although this may appear to mark the closing chapter of Otto Hutt as a brand, Samuel Naldi’s statement and his devotion to it suggest that Otto Hutt will live on for generations through enthusiasts like Samuel, who recognise true value even when a product is no longer anchored to the brand itself.
Those wishing to add the iconic design08 or the anniversary designC to their collection can visit Style of Zug, where full support is available throughout the purchasing process and for any future servicing or repairs.
