Pelikan Honours 40 Years of Souverän with a Spectacular Limited Edition

Like Montblanc or Graf von Faber-Castell, Pelikan is a manufacturer that has a distinctive series for which it is widely known and that is undoubtedly, the Souverän. Classic and iconic, the series has made a name for itself among enthusiasts and collectors thanks to its elegant design and legendary striped pattern. This year Souverän turns 40 and Pelikan is celebrating its anniversary with a spectacular limited edition. Let’s find out more about it!

First launched in 1982, the Souverän made his debut in an M400-sized body with the classic black-and-green striped pattern, perhaps the most recognisable model to this day. Although not all models in the Souverän range would feature the striped pattern (see the tortoiseshell editions), this one became a quintessential symbol of the German brand, making it world famous.

Today, after 40 years, the Pelikan Souverän is still one of the most coveted writing instruments on the market. To honour its past and timelessness the brand has designed a special edition that carries on the German tradition. With a modern design, featuring the same black-and-green striped pattern that established the series, the M800-sized anniversary edition exudes a majestic air.

A golden ring with finely sculpted stripes set halfway down the barrel highlights Souverän’s leitmotif – the quintessential striped design.

Unlike other versions, the piston knob as well as the grip section are gold-plated, thus harmoniously matching the other gilded ornaments and the nib. An element that has already become legendary – the metal Pelikan logo – adorns the cap’s finial standing as a sign of permanence and tradition.

The heart of this anniversary edition is definitely the nib. Highly regarded for its quality, having been perfected over decades to provide an unparalleled writing experience, the 18k gold nib is decorated with a unique filigree underneath which is finely engraved “40 Years” and the Pelikan logo.

This special edition is limited to 888 pieces worldwide, a number of great significance. Since 8 is known as a symbol of infinity, I see this as a subtle statement that the Souverän series is meant to last forever. To indicate its uniqueness, each pen is numbered on the piston’s finial.

It wouldn’t have been a proper anniversary edition without a nice packaging box. By pulling up the handle of the luxurious gift box the sides will unfold revealing the beautiful edition next to a 40th anniversary dark-green Pelikan Ink 4001®. Inside the box, there’s also a golden badge engraved with the pen’s serial number.

The Anniversary Edition of Souverän will be available from November and it will sell for about €1,595.
