We’re so busy during the day that taking a few moments to journal – whether in the morning or before going to sleep – can feel like a luxury. But what if it became a healthy habit? In today’s article, I want to share a few reasons why you should consider writing a few lines in your journal at the start or end of your day. Trust me, you’ll thank us later!
Why Journal?
Journaling is perhaps one of the simplest ways to enjoy handwriting, and it’s an activity I encourage everyone to try. It’s a great way to pause, reflect, and connect with your thoughts. In the morning, journaling can set a positive tone for the day ahead, allowing you to clarify your intentions and set goals. On the other hand, in the evening, it serves as a gentle wind-down – helping you to process your day, express gratitude, or reflect on lessons learned.
Choosing Your Time: Morning or Night?
There’s no right or wrong time to journal – it’s all about what fits your lifestyle. If you’re a morning person, just go for it! You can do it before heading to the gym or while having breakfast. Get that notebook and drop a few lines, plan your day, or set a few goals you want to achieve. It can be as simple as writing down three things you’re grateful for. You don’t have to go overboard – but if you feel like writing more, that’s totally fine.
To be honest, there are days when I feel like skipping journaling in the morning, but then I always make sure to do it at night before going to sleep. It helps me reflect on the day’s events. I like to write down the highlight of the day, what I could’ve done better, and what I’d like to do more the next day. If I’ve had a tough day, I even write down how I felt. That simple act of putting my emotions into words helps me release tension and gain a clearer perspective before resting. To make the process even more enjoyable, I highly recommend making yourself a cup of tea – it adds a comforting touch to the routine.
How to Make It a Habit
Start small. Aim for just a few minutes at first, focusing on consistency rather than perfection. Keep your journal by your bedside or at your favorite morning spot as a visual reminder. You might choose to write three pages every day, a technique called “morning pages,” or opt for a shorter reflection if pressed for time.
Use prompts if you’re unsure where to start. In the morning, try: “What do I want to achieve today?” or “How can I practice kindness?” At night, consider: “What made me smile today?” or “What did I learn from today’s challenges?”
A Simple Act of Self-Care
Whether you decide to journal in the morning and start the day big, or before bedtime to unwind like a champ, never skip a day of this simple yet fulfilling act. The beauty of journaling? It simply doesn’t require perfection, just honesty. Take time for yourself and let your thoughts flow. Six months from now, you’ll notice how much it has changed your life. You won’t even notice when it turns from a habit into a healthy routine.
Now get that notebook ready for tomorrow morning!
