HANE KURO: SCRIBO Introduces a New Edition to the Urushi Collection

Following the great success of its first Urushi edition, SCRIBO announced a second collection in collaboration with Urushi Master Arakawa-San, further cementing the creative partnership initiated in 2024.

I’m a huge fan of dark-toned pens, but that subtle green added a new layer of depth. It only took a couple of seconds for me to fall for this edition. You see, the more you look at it, the more you become fascinated by its lustre, and that’s the real beauty of Urushi. Besides, what makes this collection even more unique is the story behind it. This edition emerged after SCRIBO’s visit to Japan in early 2025. That SCRIBO chose to visit the Japanese workshop in person, rather than coordinating the project from its Bologna headquarters, says much about the brand’s thoughtful approach. It’s a gesture that show respect for the craft, the collaborators, and ultimately, the customers.

“Even more surprising was our meeting with the Urushi masters with whom we began our collaboration last year, and seeing in real the making of our fountain pens with such an ancient technique where every gesture, slow and precise, strives for perfection was an almost mystical experience. And on that dark night, a green reflection of the lights of the traditional houses of Yamanakaonsen caught our attention…” SCRIBO notes on its website.

While the first edition played with reddish-brown tones, this latest creation takes its cues from the mystery of night.

The edition is the result of a meticulous, three-stage process that speaks to the quiet mastery behind its creation. It begins with Urushi Master Arakawa-san, who applies the first layer onto the surface using the ancient Tamenuri technique. Each layer is followed by another, and between coats, the pen rests in a humidity-controlled environment, where a slow drying process works its magic on the depth and character of the final piece.

Once Arakawa-san’s work is complete, Hariya-san lends a personal touch, precisely inscribing the names of both Arakawa-san and SCRIBO in elegant Katakana ideograms. The final stage unfolds with Rabea Gebler overseeing every detail before each piece makes its way back to Bologna for final testing and packaging.

Due to the labor-intensive production, the collection is limited to just 100 pieces: 50 with yellow gold trim and 50 with platinum trim. Each unit is fitted with either an 18k gold or 14k gold flex nib and operates with a cartridge/converter system. Priced at €983.61, the new edition is most likely already sold out.
