At the forefront of the industry, Montblanc shows that art can live far beyond museum walls, and that a writing instrument’s modest surface can still become a canvas for exceptional detail in the hands of skilled craftsmen. In doing so, the Maison honours artists whose legacies deserve to be preserved, and few collections express that philosophy better than the Masters of Art line. Rather than simply placing an artist’s name on a pen, the centuries-old house studies the individual, the era, and the visual language they created, then reinterprets that legacy through precious materials, engraving, lacquer, and form. For 2026, Montblanc turns its attention to Henri Matisse, one of the defining creative forces of the 20th century.
Matisse is often remembered for his bold colours and fluid shapes, but his story is just as fascinating as his art. Most people do not even know that before devoting himself to art, Henri Matisse initially studied law, only discovering a love for painting while recovering from illness. That change of direction gave the world one of modern art’s most recognisable voices. He became a central figure of Fauvism, the movement that shocked audiences with intense colour, and later reinvented himself again through his famous paper cut-outs created in his later years. Few artists managed to evolve so radically more than once, and even fewer stood out with the same boldness as Henri Matisse did.
This collection explores different chapters of Matisse’s life and creative journey, translating key moments of his career into five distinct editions inspired by paintings, travels, and artistic breakthroughs that shaped his legacy. The silhouette of the writing instruments draws inspiration from his sculptural forms, while the clip references The Sheaf (1953), one of his celebrated cut-out works, becoming recognisable to those familiar with Matisse while exuding enough elegance for those who simply appreciate thoughtful design.
Limited Edition 4810
The collection debuts with the Limited Edition 4810, perhaps the most visually immediate piece in the lineup. Inspired by Blue Nude III (1952), one of the most iconic works from Matisse’s celebrated cut-out series, it transforms the artist’s bold blue-and-white composition into a striking writing instrument. What first appears as an abstract interplay of shapes gradually reveals the seated female figure as the barrel is rotated – a thoughtful nod to Matisse’s method of “drawing with scissors,” cutting painted paper into organic forms and arranging them into lively compositions.
The blue and white lacquer is paired with platinum-coated trim for a modern contrast, while the cap top features the Montblanc emblem in white set within blue precious resin. I also like the detail of the white lacquered clip, inspired by the botanical rhythm of The Sheaf (1953), which adds another layer of artistic reference without feeling heavy. Completing the piece is a handcrafted rhodium-coated solid Au 750 gold nib engraved with motifs inspired by Matisse’s lithographs and his interwoven initials, “H” and “M.” The edition is limited to 4,810 fountain pens and 4,810 rollerball pens.
Fountain Pen: €4,200.00
Rollerball Pen: €3,900.00
Limited Edition 888
The 888 edition draws inspiration from one of the artist’s paintings, La Blouse Roumaine (1940), a work depicting a woman wearing a blue skirt and a traditional white Romanian blouse, known as the ie, adorned with vibrant hand-embroidered geometric motifs in red and black. Few people know, however, that the painting came to life after one of Henri Matisse’s friends, the Romanian painter Theodor Pallady, gifted him such a traditional blouse. The edition celebrates Matisse’s fascination with textiles, costumes, ornament, and colour as expressive structure. The barrel and cap revisit the vivid red and blue palette of the painting, their textured lacquer recalling the surface of a canvas. Embroidered motifs from the blouse are rendered in black and red lacquer on the barrel and refined engravings on the solid Au 750 gold cone.
The Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl is set within black onyx and framed by a solid Au 750 gold ring, while the cone is also crowned with black onyx, reinforcing the interplay between material richness and artistic reference. The solid Au 750 gold nib is embossed with Matisse’s drawing Large Face (Mask) (1952), honouring the purity of his line. The edition is limited to only 888 fountain pens.
Fountain Pen: €10,500.00
Limited Edition 161
Adorned with blackened sterling silver, cocobolo wood and refernces to Polynesian motifs, the Limited Edition 161 is a nod to Matisse’s transformative trip to Tahiti in 1930, which played a crucial role in freshening up his creativity. Here, the cap features a skilful 3D recreation of hand-engraved details from the Window in Tahiti (1935) painting capturing the trees and boat as observed from the artist’s hotel window in Papeete.
The barrel, crafted from cocobolo wood, features a geometric pattern based on the traditional tapa cloth brought back by Matisse from the South Seas. The solid Au 750 rose gold cap top is crowned with the Montblanc emblem in iridescent paua shell, reminiscent of the ocean’s shifting light. The handcrafted nib, also in solid Au 750 rose gold and partly rhodium-coated, bears the Greek letter Phi (Φ), symbolizing the golden ratio (1.618…), alongside details inspired by Matisse’s work Polynesia The Sky. Limited to 161 pieces in reference to this divine proportion, the edition embodies harmony, craftsmanship and the influence of distant lands and luminous colour on Matisse’s work.
Fountain Pen: €32,000.00
Limited Edition 96
This limited edition of just 96 pieces pays tribute to Matisse’s monumental masterpiece, “Dance II,” capturing the rhythm, movement, and elemental energy of the iconic composition. The deep blue and turquoise lacquer, masterfully applied by hand, highlights the bronze dancers, who seem to encircle the cap and barrel in a perfect choreography. Delicate engravings accentuate the contours of the dancers’ bodies, making them appear more vibrant. The solid 750 Au rose gold accessories and rings, some of which feature special engravings to create a shimmering effect, complete the design with an eye-catching finish.
This time, the cap top features the Montblanc emblem in turquoise stone, framed by solid Au 750 gold and contrasted with red jasper, a stone that also appears at the base of the cone. The solid Au 750 gold nib is embossed with a decoration recalling Matisse’s lithographic work, alongside the interwoven initials “H” and “M”. The limitation of 96 pieces references the pivotal year 1896, when Henri Matisse first exhibited at the Salon des Beaux-Arts.
Fountain Pen: €52,000.00
Limited Edition 8
The Limited Edition 8 stands as the apogee of the collection, drawing from the Purple Robe and Anemones (1937), a work that translates Matisse’s devotion to decorative composition, vibrant colour, and stylised form. Crafted from solid Au 750 white gold, the cap and barrel are embellished with meticulously handcrafted enamel that reinterprets key elements of the painting, from the flowing striped robe to the lush bouquet of anemones. On top of that, intricate hand-finished 3D engravings are added on the lower barrel and cone, echoing the arabesque ornamentation of the flower table depicted in the artwork.
An additional green jade stone decorates the base of the cone, while a red carnelian adorns the cap, crowned with the Montblanc emblem rendered in pavé-set diamonds on solid Au 750 gold. Warm cognac-coloured diamonds gracefully encircle both the cap and the barrel, adding an extra touch of glamour to the edition. Unlike the other editions in the line-up, the handcrafted solid Au 750 gold nib is set with a brilliant-cut diamond and features an embossing inspired by Matisse’s Large Face (Mask).
As a supreme homage to the artist’s legacy and bold vision, Montblanc created only eight pieces worldwide, a true collector’s gem for both admirers of Henri Matisse and the writing culture.
Fountain Pen: €230,000.00
In addition to the collection, Montblanc designed a special notebook that carries an illustration of Blue Nude III on the cover, as well as an ink set of three colours – a red, a blue, and a green –inspired by Henri Matisse’s vibrant use of colour throughout his work.
