Visconti Homo Sapiens Carbon Moiré: Exploring New Advanced Materials

Judging by the direction the pen industry is taking, I’m confident in saying this is one of the most exciting times for innovation, creativity, and remarkable designs. While some brands play it safe by simply adding new colors to their existing models, others, like Visconti with its Homo Sapiens edition in carbon, are boldly exploring new advanced materials. The Homo Sapiens is the most iconic design in their portfolio and I’ve seen it in many variations before, but this one in carbon is absolutely marvelous.

The Project

Some great ideas may take years to develop before a prototype is ready. This is also the case with Visconti. “The Homo Sapiens Carbon Moiré is the result of years of experimentation aimed at achieving the perfect union of cutting-edge technology and unparalleled aesthetics.” says the Florence-based brand on its website.

Visconti has consistently redefined innovation in their Homo Sapiens line by introducing groundbreaking materials that set new standards in writing instruments. Over the years, the brand has utilized unique materials, including real lava from Mount Etna, showcasing their dedication to creativity and craftsmanship. Continuing this pursuit, Visconti’s designers have set a new goal of seeking advanced materials inspired by the engineering precision and luxury of Italy’s prestigious supercars. The result is a new iteration of the Homo Sapiens line that stands out with its distinctive look and feel.

The Design

The Carbon Moiré design is the result of extensive research and experimentation, enabling Visconti to develop and implement forged carbon—a recently conceived composite material made by combining carbon fiber fragments and resin—into their pens. This characteristic gives the barrel an organic appearance, with the fibers taking on an irregular and dynamic pattern.

If you look closer at the pen, you’ll notice subtle golden hues shimmering across its surface. This might leave you wondering: how could resin and carbon, traditionally dark and matte materials, produce such visual effects? To give the pen that striking and luxurious touch, the designers incorporated delicate gold leaf into the composite material. This element adds depth and dimension, resulting in unique reflections, especially in the light. How cool is that?

The benefits of forged carbon composite extend far beyond its aesthetic appeal. The material significantly reduces the pen’s weight, making it remarkably lightweight at only 40g—half the weight of an Otto Hutt design08. To maintain this lightweight characteristic, Visconti has made all the pen’s metal components from grade 5 titanium. This advanced alloy is not only exceptionally durable but also twice as light as traditional materials like brass or steel. “This alloy undergoes a controlled natural oxidation treatment, allowing our designers to match the color of the gold leaf present in the resin by harnessing the chemical properties of titanium without using paint.” says Visconti.

To protect the metal components, a very thin layer of transparent nano-ceramic coating is applied. That stabilizes the color over time and prevents the titanium from potential micro-scratches. Another innovative feature worth mentioning about this edition is the filling system—the iconic Power Filler Double Reservoir filling system—which allows for greater ink capacity and prevents leaks (especially during travel). To mark the introduction of the double reservoir, the band features a central band in transparent acrylic, which allows you to observe the ink level even when the pen is capped.

An 18k gold large nib crowns the pen providing a smooth writing experience. It is available in a wide range of sizes, including extra fine, fine, medium, broad, and stub to suit diverse writing preferences.

The edition is offered as a fountain pen and rollerball pen and is limited to only 226 pieces worldwide, an homage to the atomic numbers of the key chemical elements that give the pen its extraordinary lightness: carbon (6) and titanium (22). It is currently unavailable on Visconti’s website, but it can still be found at other authorized retailers.

Pilot Iroshizuku, Scribo, Leonardo and Sailor produce great inks. Sailor inks are gentle enough to be used on older pens too.
